This would be a terrible way to play against an even remotely thinking player, but we are making the assumption that they aren’t. Quite simply this allows us to get more value when we have their range dominated and get away cheaply with our bluffs and misses. If the players are very weak and unlikely to adjust to you mixing sizes, I would suggest opening for larger bet sizes with the top of our range and smaller with the weaker hands. Online we expect to get 3-bet a lot from the regulars and have to adjust our ranges accordingly, so it can be a surprise when you come up against very little resistance in a live game. A student recently asked me what I thought the best way to exploit live players who don’t 3-bet us enough was.
